PaperTest GMAT - Mixture problem

by oks » Tue Sep 02, 2008 9:44 pm
A mixture of nuts is to contain 3 parts cashews to 6 parts almonds to 7 parts walnuts by weight. How many pounds of almonds will be needed to make 5 pounds of the mixture?

Answer: 15/8

I got the answer right but I am not sure if my approach was correct. Could someone explain a correct and fast solution please?

Thanks!

3x +6x+7x =1
X= 1/16

weight of almonds in 1 pound of mixture = 1/16 *6

in 5 pounds of mixture = 6/16*5 = 15/8
