Ram started from P towards Q at 3:00 am. and Ravi started from Q towards P at 8:00 am. If they met each other at 12:00 noon and later reached their destinations simultaneously, at what time did Ram reach Q?

12:10 p.m.

5:30 p.m.

6:00 p.m.

8:00 p.m.

5:30 p.m.

6:00 p.m.

IMO C

Let total distance be x. Speed of Ram = u and Speed of Ravi =v

At 12 Ram covered 9u (12-3 Hrs) and Ravi covered 4v (12-8Hrs) in distance.

So 9u+4v = x ...[1]

they reach simultaneously the time taken by them each to reach destination is same after they meet

Thus 4v/u = 9u/v (as after meeting Ravi has to cover 9u and Ram has to 4v)

=> v/u = 3/2

So put v = 3u/2 in (1) and get x = 10v

So Ravi takes 10hrs to cover x and at 12 he has covered 4hrs

So Remaining 6hrs he has to cover

12noon + 6 = 6PM

Say, speed of Ram = x per hour and speed of Ravi = y per hour

When they met,
  • Ram has traveled for (12 - 3) = 9 hours => Distance traveled = 9x
    Ravi has traveled for (12 - 8) = 4 hours => Distance traveled = 4y
After meeting they will cover the distance traveled by the other in same time, thus (9x/y) = (4y/x) => x = (2/3)y

Ram has to cover a distance of 4y with speed of (2/3)y per hour.
Required time = (4y)/(2y/3) hours = 6 hours

Ram will reach the Q at (12:00 noon + 6 hours) = 6:00 PM

The correct answer is C.
