The price of a cycle is reduced by 25 per cent. The new price is reduced by a further 20 per cent. The two reductions together are equal to a single reduction of

A. 45%
B. 40%
C. 35%
D. 32.5%
E. 30%

IMO B
its 4/5(3/4x)=3/5 of x
red is x-3x/5=2x/5=40% of x

overall reduction 40%

Let x be the initial price
after 1st reduction price = x-0.25x = 0.75 x
after second reduction price = 0.75x - 0.75x (0.2) = 0.8 x 0.75 x = 0.6x
so total reduction = x=0.6x = 0.4x

I prefer plugging in Numbers when it comes to percents

Let X =100

after 25% reuction : 75 :

after 20 % reduction : 60

So at the end : 100-60: 40

40% reduction!!

yeah gmatmochan that is also indeed a good approach to consider the things as 100 and then solve the problem sometimes it solves in seconds... here too acc to ur method its solvable in mind.only...thanks

what's done above is the meaning of percent : per cent ( for every 100) !

and that's the whole concept !
