After 65+ hours of studying, my GMAT scores dropped to 540

Hi everyone,

I just need some advice. I've been discouraged by my results as of late. Here are my practice GMAT scores so far:

1) 600 (Kaplan, online diagnostic, skipped AWA, mid-November)
2) 540 (Kaplan CD CAT 1, early December)
3) 540 (Kaplan CD CAT 2, late December)

I started studying using MGMAT guides 0-8. I'm about halfway done through the series. I've also kept an error log. Based on my error log, there really isn't one or two key points of weakness. It seems that I'm struggling with all of the areas. I've worked on my timing (making necessary guesses/freebies here and there to keep pace), but my scores haven't improved.

I'm planning on taking the exam in March (with a retake in May if necessary) before the new test format is implemented. If I can't get my practice scores up near the 700+ range, then I need to reschedule asap.

Anyone have any advice for me? Your help is much appreciated.

Seems like you have two issues: content-knowledge, and lack of strategy.

I'd worry less about practice tests and pacing right now, and instead focus on building your content knowledge and adopting a strategy for the five current question-types RC, SC, CR, DS and PS, that is methodical and effective.

One thing about the GMAT is that more studying hours and more questions does NOT necessarily equate to a higher score. MGMAT makes great stuff, and here are the books I'd get and focus on:

Kaplan Math Workbook
MGMAT Number Prop
OG12
MGMAT SC
MGMAT Number Prop
Powerscore CR

I'd also take advantage of the free materials (flashcards, Idiom lists, etc.) here on BTG, and I'd create a free Grockit trial account (I'm one of the Grockit tutors) to access our question bank as well.

You're smart to use an Error Log! Just take the studying to the next level and get away from tests for a bit. Good luck!
