og-100 like Vs as ....

by abhaypratapsingh » Sun May 11, 2008 3:34 pm
Proponents of artificial intelligence say they will be able to make computers that can understand English and other languages, recognize objects, and reason as an expert does- computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes such as these
I could narrow down to following two options:

1) as an expert does, which may be used for purposes such as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan

2) like an expert - computers that will be used for purposes such as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan

Now I know ",which" is usually avoided unless noun before the "," is the one "which" is refering to. At the same time "like" is used for similarity of nouns not clauses. for "I work like a librarian" is wrong.

OA: 2

Any clarification will help .

thanks.

"Like" is used to compare the reasoning of the computer. So I think it is appropriate in this scenario.

When the sentence says -

1. as an expert does - you are comparing the doing so this is correct

2. like an expert - you are comparing computer and expert so this is also correct

These two answer are both correct if you just look at the comparison.

Between these two the first is wrong because which is supposed to modify computers but it is modifying does ....

As per your reasoning statement "I work like a librarian" should be a correct statement . But according to OG it is a wrong statement and correct statement is ""I work as a librarian".

Am I missing something .. your help will be highly appreciated...

thanks,

This is my understanding:

I work like a librarian - compares the verb work so incorrect

I work as a librarian does - correct

I like a librarian work in a library - correct

I agree. as is correct here, because the actions of computers and an expert are being compared

If you want to use Like, IMO sentence should be something like this

Computers like Experts can do X, Y and Z

At least thats my understanding.

I believe this Q is one of those which fall under the best choice and which is grammatically incorrect as "which" is incorrectly placed and hence the answer
