How many can you miss?

by seattlecali » Mon May 24, 2010 9:38 am
Hypothetically to fall in the 600-650 score range..how many questions can you miss on Quant and Verbal?

I know most people will say "it depends.." on the type of questions whether its low, med, or hard question type..

But hypothetically speaking on 37 Quant questions...a good, above average test taker will miss how many..10-15?

On 41 Verbal qusetions...a good, above average test taker will miss how many..10?

I'm missing about 15-18 on Quant and about 18-20 on Verbal..

I just want to get a feel because I'm getting hoovering around 550-590 and I can't seem to break 600 and I see so many people on this forum score 600-700+..its quite discouraging!

Need some advice!

I've take 3 Kaplan CATS as well as the GMATPrep 1 and here are my results thus far

Kap CAT 1 - 500
Kap CAT 2 - 560
Kap CAT 3 - 590

GMAT Prep 1 - 530 Q38% V24% I missed 18 on Quant and 19 on Verbal...

How can I improve my Verbal to get it to into the 35-40% range?

Also, is it safe to assume that the score we get on GMAT prep 1 is SKEWED in the fact that so many people have taken it and re-taken it so the average keeps getting bumped up??

How could the gmatprep algorithm know how many people have taken it?

The software is practice and doesn't report your scores over the internet. It calculates them internally.

do not focus so much on the score of the practice exams... dissect then improve upon the areas you did poorly in... the score will start to come up if you do just that... take if from me... i'm in the same boat... i have to totally revamp my strategy when I start studying again..

the main thing i'm going to do differently is not focus on ways to optimize my score and focus on the content of the exam rather than each test score...

to get your score up into that range... well... memorize all of the SC rules - no not kidding... memorize them... it's not fun.. it's not sexy but when you start seeing your hit rate go up... you'll be glad.

Thanks Money,

I've been on this site since January 2010 when I decided that I wanted to pursue B-school. I first noticed how active you were and have since been following you vicuriously on your blog. I must say it has been an invaluable source for me in terms of having someone else going through the process with.

I'm pretty confident in my Quant as I'm in the 38-40% range..More or less I know that thats as much as I will know..However, with Verbal...I've been dedicating this whole month to it because it is where I can improve upon the most..I've worked out my CR to the point where my hit rate is about 80%..I don't have a problem with CR and with SC I'm doing fairly okay but RC is where I'm doing the poorest..

I signed up for my test at the end of June so I'm just truckin' along right now..I'm taking 1 CAT per week but since this weekend is a long weekend..i'm hoping to get in 3 CATS and hopefully see progression. I feel confident in terms of the context that the GMAT is testing but somehow I just haven't been able to put the whole package together!

In any event, I'm rooting for you and me both!
