Of the 1400 College teachers surveyed 42% said they considered engaging in research an essential goal. How many of the college teachers surveyed were women?

1. In the survey 36% of the men and 50% of the women said that they considered engaging in research an essential goal.
2. In the survey, 288 men said they considered engaging in research an essential goal.
The trick is to translate the words into math.

Before we examine the 2 statements, we know that:

M+W = 1400 (since each of the teachers was either a man or a woman)

Statement 1:
.36M+.50W = .42*1400
This gives us a 2nd equation with M and W.
2 variables, 2 equations: Sufficient.

Statement 2:
Tells us nothing about the men and women who did not consider research an essential goal, so we can't determine the total number of women. Insufficient.

The correct answer is A.

nice solution here, the same answer
just one question to instructor
does any way exist to verify the linea equation, to be sure that it has many or only one pair of solutions?
or the best way to pick numbers

Please review my explanation. With statement 1, we have two linear equations:

M+W=1400 (since the total number of teachers is 1400)
.36M+.5W=.42*1400 (info given in statement 1)

2 variables, 2 different linear equations, so we can solve for each variable.

yes Gury it 100% helped, and i have no problems with this one
my question (but it perhaps better to send in a new post) regards 1 linea equation with two unknows,
for example
3x+2y=7, or
37x+5y=232, ( sometimes i face similar equations in the text problems) and spend to much time solving them)
