cups of pasta

by sanju09 » Mon Apr 06, 2009 5:11 am
Malik's recipe for 4 servings of a certain dish requires 3/2 cups of pasta. According to this recipe, what is the number of cups of pasta that Malik will use the next time he prepares this dish?
(1) The next time he prepares this dish, Malik will make half as many servings as he did the last time he prepared the dish.
(2) Malik used 6 cups of pasta the last time he prepared this dish.

Stmt I

We do not know how many servings he prepared last time

Insufficient

Stmt II

1.5 cups of pasta = 4 serving

multiply both sides by 4

6 cups of pasta = 16 serving

We know how many servings he prepared last time but we dont know how many he requires this time

Insufficient

Stmt I & II

We know he would require 3 cups of pasta to prepare for 8 servings

Sufficient

I still can't seem to ge tmy head around this problem as trivial as it may sound!!!

Doesn't the question mention that as per recipe Malik needed 1.5 cup pasta to prepare for 4 servings? :?

Stmt I:
next time = 1/2 * (servings last time) = (1/2) * (4) = 2 servings
Hence, next time around he will need-
4 servings ---> 1.5 cup pasta
2 servings ---> (2 * 1.5) / 4 = 3/4

Suff. :roll:

Stmt-II:
Malik used 6 cups of pasta the last time he prepared this dish.

Confused! :?

Kanha81, the question does not say that Malik prepared 4 servings last time. All it says is Malik requires 1.5 cups to prepare 4 servings. It is like saying 'it requires 2 eggs to prepare a spanish omlette' but it does not say I cooked only 1 omlette, I might have cooked 2 omlettes

Thanks buddy. A FATAL mistake of not reading/understanding the problem carefully. I guess I should cook often!
