Hello,

Can you please tell me if my approach is correct here?

If x/y has remainder 9, and x/y = 9.81, what is the value of y?

A) 11 1/9
B) 22 2/9
C) 33 1/3
D) 44 1/3
E) 55 1/5

OA: A

x/y has remainder 9 => x = (y . Q) + 9 ; where Q is the quotient
=> x/y = Q + 9/y - I

x/y = 9.81 => x/y = 9 + 81/100 - II

From I and II,

Q + 9/y = 9 + 81/100

=> 9/y = 81/100

=> 1/y = 9/100

=> y = 100/9

Hence, A

Thanks a lot,
Sri

Hi Sri,

What is the source of this question? I ask because any question that involves remainders will be based on integers (and all of the answers are NOT integers). This is NOT how the Official GMAT tests this concept, so the source of this question is questionable.
