GMATPrep: nuclear power ..

Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power, while in Germany it is just over 33 percent.

A) while in Germany it is just over 33 percent

B) compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent

C) whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany

D) whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany

E) compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent

Need help for right answer with explanation please. OA to follow.

I think it is (C).

(A) and (E) are wrong because "it" refers to nuclear power and "nuclear power is just over 33 percent" is not complete.
(B) is wrong because the comparison of "Germany" and "the energy" does not make sense.
(D) is awkward because "in Germany" is at the end so you aren't sure if which energy is being referred to.

Not the best explanations... and I could be wrong.

C

C uses correct comparison

In one side of the comparison, we have "Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France "

so we need "over X % of the energy produced in YYY"

Only C does it, Rest play with incorrect comparison

Beg to differ.

C changes the sentence meaning, as it leads us to believe that 33% of the energy produced in Germany is nuclear power.

D on the other hand maintains sentence meaning and doesnt use "it"..and so in my opinion it is the best answer .

What exactly is wrong in B ?

OG and some posts on other threads say
This sentence compares 75 percent to Germany; it is not clear what 33 percent refers to.
I feel it is France which is being compared to Germany - the error in this option is
which uses just over 33 percent
I have trouble whenever I see a structure like "S+V+O, compared to/with X]"
What does X compare to/with? The subject of the preceding clause? The object of the preceding clause? Is there a grammar rule restricting what X can be compared to?


In this sentence
A recent review of pay scales indicates that, on average, CEO's now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, as compared to 42 times their pay, the ratio of 42 times in 1980
419 times the pay is compared to 42 times their pay

If nothing else, B changes the meaning of the sentence; B tells us about power used in Germany, not power produced in Germany.
