Hi All,

In the below question the OA is "[spoiler]C"[/spoiler]....Can some one explain how can we kick out[spoiler] "A","B" and "D" ?[/spoiler]

The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering awarded by colleges and universities in the United States increased by more than twice from 1978 to 1985.

(A) increased by more than twice
(B) increased more than two times
(C) more than doubled
(D) was more than doubled
(E) had more than doubled

(A) increased by more than twice
(B) increased more than two times

Both of the above choices contain redundancy. don't need to say it increased and then doubled. A more elegant way of putting it would be that it "more than doubled"

(D) was more than doubled
the use of "was" is not as concise as (C)

oh one more thing about answer choice (D),

"was more than doubled" is in the PASSIVE voice
"more than doubled" is in the ACTIVE voice.

GMAT prefers active voice, since this usually is a better concise choice of words.
