SC - Victoria and Albert Museum

by makkiemaps » Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:10 pm
Although it was once funded entirely by the government, the Victoria and Albert Museum was one of the first of Britain's national museums seeking support from corporations and private donors and to increase income by increasing attendance.
(A) one of the first of Britain's national museums seeking support from
(B) one of Britain's first national museums seeking support of
(C) among Britain's first national museums to seek support of
(D) among the first of Britain's national museums to seek support from
(E) among Britain's first national museums that have sought the support of

OA is D

Discussed before but I couldn't find a single post which explains why "among" is correct here. I thought when picking a part of a group, we use "of"

Eg: "The chief of Army", "He is one of my best friends"

It's been a while since I touched SC material. But according to me, D agrees with the parallelism rule.

to seek support from and to increase income.

C also comes close but the issue I see with C is that "among Britain's first national museums" alters the meaning to sound as if the musuem is among Britain'ss first, not the first to seek support.

Did I help you?
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

vineeshp is absolutely correct in his explanation.........................in order to keep the sentence parallel we require a clause starting from "to" and only C and D option has that but C changes the intended meaning and is therefore the wrong choice............

1]-Narrow down to C and D on basis of parallelism .......... to seek ... and to increase
2]-support of vs support from
3]-Among the first of Britain's national museums Vs among Britain's first national museums

IMO D

Also note that "one of the first" isn't wrong, it's just more wordy than "among the first" and avoids the (correct, less desirable) repetition of the word of. The rest of choice A makes it truly wrong, of course.
