Parallelism doubt

Specific query in below question: I understand that option B is best. But how is it that the list can be considered as parallel: Cultivation, Harvesting and Exploitation

Building on civilizations that preceded them in coastal Peru, the Mochica developed their own elaborate society, based on cultivating such crops like corn and beans, the harvesting of fish and shellfish, and exploiting other wild and domestic resources.


B. based on cultivation of such crops like corn and beans, the harvesting of fish and shellfish, and the exploitation

C. and basing it on the cultivation of crops like corn and beans, harvesting fish and seafood, and the exploiting of

D. and they based it on their cultivation of crops such as corn and beans, the harvest of fish and seafood, and exploiting

E. and they based it on their cultivating such crops such as corn and beans, their harvest of fish and shellfish, and they exploite

Hi,
If it were just 'harvesting fish', as in C, it is the verb form but 'harvesting of' acts as a noun(Gerund). Hence it is parallel to other noun forms-cultivation, exploitation.

The original sentence should read "such crops AS", not "such crops like".

Also, the sentence should have "the" before cultivation to be truly parallel:the cultivation of, the harvesting of, the exploitation of.

Cultivation: Action Noun
The Harvesting: Complex Gerund[ Article(a/an/the)/adjective + Verb-ing ]
The Exploitation: Action Noun

Only Complex Gerund can be parallel to the action noun

And as mentioned, it should be AS instead of LIKE.

i almost had a heart attack seeing your question with LIKE in it. My SC as it is, is bad and AS vs LIKE is a small cocept I was confident on. but this question troubled me.
