Need Help for Verbal!

by RajeevGmatTaget700 » Fri Nov 29, 2013 4:05 am
Hi ALL,

I am new to this forum and trying to build up a solid plan to beat the gmat.
Well, i am over 2 months of my preparation which included going through KAPLAN`s GMAT Premier 2014.
I have already gone through each section of the book and done with all of the concept building and questions from the book. I am currently doing OG 13th Edition.
Last week i took the kaplan`s diagnostic test to gauge my level and scored a 620 (49Q,21V). Quant seems to be fine but Verbal is a concern. I am a non-native english speaker hence verbal is creating issues for me.
Need some inputs on how to build up on the Verbal part.My target for the verbal is 42 also improving Quant to touch 50 is a good idea. Overall i have set a target of 720 for myself. I am in no hurry to appear the Gmat but currenly i intend to wrap up by April,2014. So that means i have sometime to build and focus on my weaknesses which happens to be VERBAL.

Someone please suggest as to what this score of 620 on KAPLAN DIAGNOSTIC could measure on the real GMAT. How to get going with the verbal portion?

Thanks,
Rajeev.

Hi Rajeev,

Since you've been studying for 2 months, I'm curious if your practice CAT score is your first/only CAT that you've taken or if there have been others? A 620 is a solid score, but you've correctly identified that you need to do some serious work on the Verbal Section. The good news is that you have plenty of time to continue studying and the Verbal section is just as predictable and beatable as the Quant section.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the quick response. Yes this is the first CAT i appeared and i haven't appeared any CAT except this one. I plan to work on the verbal section for a month or so and then take up CAT`s.
Is that a good strategy? Also, Please if you could let me know some material which could help on SC (I am just always depending on my ear to get the answer on this section) and RC.
I know RC will improve only with practice but SC i am sure there must be more fundamentals which i am not getting right.

Thanks,
Rajeev.

Hi Rajeev,

I'd suggest that you make a few adjustments to your study plan. Instead of waiting so long before your next CAT, I'd suggest that you plan on taking one every 1-2 weeks. As you get closer to your Official Test Date, you'll want to increase the frequency to 1/week. Since you have plenty of time before your planned Test Date, you can can continue to use the various resources that you already have.
