by jamesk486 » Sun May 06, 2007 8:16 am
On level farmland, 2 runners leave at the same time from the intersection of 2 country roads. One runner jobs due north at a constant rate of 8 miles per hour while the second runner jogs due east at a constant rate that is 4 miles per hour faster than the first runner's rate. How far apart, to the nearest mile, will they be after 1/2 hours?

A. 6
B. 7
C. 8
D. 12
E. 14

Solve this using Pyth. theorem of triangles

A

+------- B

A travels 4 miles in 1/2 hour
B travels 6 miles in 1/2 hour

Distance between A and B is sqrt (4^2 + 6^2) = sqrt (52)
which is approx 7
