Evaluating the argument

by erjamit » Sun Jun 29, 2008 10:33 am
Which of the following would it be most useful to determine in evaluating the argument?

I want to understand, what does evaluating the argument means. And how to tackle it.

Does it mean strengthen the argument?

I faced 2-3 evaluate the argument on my PowerPrep and I answered incorrectly all of them.

Thanks
Amit

Evaluating the argument Q's will leave out some info.

one answer choice will provide you with the best possible information to determine whether the argument or the argument's conclusion is right.

IIRC, MGMAT book for CR should have a tutorial on this.
Please do not post answer along with the Question you post/ask

Let people discuss the Questions with out seeing answers.

Hi,

I am not able to understand how to tackle "evaluate the argument" type of CR questions. How should one approach these questions. Followng is one example from OG10.

Although custom prosthetic bone replacements produced through a new computer-aided design process will cost more than twice as much as ordinary replacements, custom replacements should still be cost-effective.
Not only will surgery and recovery time be reduced, but custom replacements should last longer, thereby reducing the need for further hospital stays.
Which of the following must be studied in order to evaluate the argument presented above?
(A) The amount of time a patient spends in surgery versus the amount of time spent recovering from surgery

(B) The amount by which the cost of producing custom replacements has declined with the introduction of the new technique for producing them

(C)The degree to which the use of custom replacements is likely to reduce the need for repeat surgery when compared with the use of ordinary replacements

(D) The degree to which custom replacements produced with the new technique are more carefully manufactured than are ordinary replacements

(E) The amount by which custom replacements produced with the new technique will drop in cost as the production procedures become standardized and applicable on a larger scale

MGMAT doesn't discuss these. Kindly help

Thanks
Amit

IMO answer is C.
which tells custom replacement is likely to reduce the need for repeat surgery. In a way this is cost effective i.e. C supports the conclusion.

Please share the OA.

OA is C.

But rather than the answer I want to understand how to tackle such questions. Bcoz these type of questions are quite frequent.
