Hi, I am new to GMAT prep and I see people posting their Q and V scores, for example 50Q/44V. I am curious, what is the range for each of these sections. What combination of Q/V would be required for an 800? Also, are they each equally weighted into your final score on the GMAT CAT section?

The scaled scores range from 6 to 51 (even though GMAC materials make it appear that the scores range from 0 to 60). The Quant and Verbal sections are weighted equally in determining your score out of 800, though note that the AWA (the essays) are scored separately, and do not make any contribution to your /800 score. I do know of people who have scored 51Q/50V and have received a 790 score overall, so I don't think it's possible to get an 800 without scoring 51/51. Somewhere between 1 in 5,000 and 1 in 10,000 test-takers manage to score an 800 each year; it's very rare.

Another thing to note is that the raw scores need to be interpreted differently for the verbal and quant sections. For example, a 49 in verbal is deep into the 99th percentile, whereas a 49 in math is in the 90th percentile. It's the percentile, not so much as the raw score itself, that determines your 200-800 score. If you get the GMAT Official Guide, there are some tables in the back to help you make sense of the scores and percentiles.
