sentence structure

by dhirajdas53 » Wed Aug 29, 2012 10:02 am
According to scholars, the earliest writing was probably not a direct rendering of speech, but more than likely began as a separate and distinct symbolic system of communication, and only later merged with spoken language.

Above sentence is correct and is from official guide. My question is if I break the sentence in to two, what will be the two different part?

1.)According to scholars, the earliest writing was probably not a direct rendering of speech.

2.)but the earliest writing more than likely began as a separate and distinct symbolic system of communication, and only later merged with spoken language.

Is above two parts correct. Are they parallel? Someone please help me.

I think it is Not X (a direct rendering of speech) but Y (a separate and distinct symbolic system of communication).
