GMAT Prep Inequalities

If x is not equal to -y, Is x-y/x+y> 1?

(1)x>0
(2)y<0

Ans E
Someone suggested me not to cross multiply in inequality questions..Please tell me what should I keep in mind while approaching such problems. What kind of numbers should I pick to test the answer choices.
