Practice Questions vs. Tips/Tricks

by docta13 » Sun Nov 23, 2008 3:18 pm
I'm interested to see what people view as the priority in their studies...
1) Doing Practice Questions (e.g. OG) and Practice Tests
2) Using the many flash cards, tip/tricks, study guides and other documents passed around this forum

It's overwhelming for newbies to get a data-dump of all these great materials while also being told to run hardcore through the OG's and practice tests out there.

What's your opinion on the right combination and priority for using 1 & 2 described above?

My opinion is that it's easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer volume of available materials, when you really only need a few things:

1. The orange OG
2. The green and purple OG supplements
3. A prep guide from a reputable company

That's it.

If you truly know how to do every problem in all three OG books, you will do very well on the GMAT. As we GMAT instructors say in many posts on this forum, the key is not just doing the problems, but rather studying and analyzing them until you know them inside and out and have them virtually memorized. That way, there will be few surprises on the exam.

Good luck, and get working in the OG!

Jim,

I've read a lot of your posts, and I really appreciate your thorough and tailored opinions. I have the orange 11th OG and am about to order the quant and verbal OG guides. If you could suggest one prep book, which one would it be? Cracking the GMAT? I'm looking for one supplemental guide with some more how-to and shortcuts than what is provided in the OG books.

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with any materials other than the ones we (Veritas) offer, so I can't make a recommendation. You may want to search the forum or make another post.
