I have been doing DS for some time but not able to follow a single strategy. I dont know how to approach DS questions in methodically way.

The key is to begin each problem the same way each time. By that I mean, if there are certain steps that you take at the beginning of each question you can be sure to avoid the silly mistakes and you can also be careful to take everything into consideration.

Keep in mind that everyone struggles with Data Sufficiency (DS) questions at first. This question type is totally unique to the GMAT, so it's foreign territory.

Hi varun,

While Data Sufficiency is different from any "math" questions that you've ever had to deal with, the process for beating a DS question is standardized (it's always 4 or 5 steps, depending on the situation). DS question also test a variety of skills beyond math skills: organization, accuracy, attention-to-detail, thoroughness, etc., so you have to be willing to do ENOUGH work to prove what the answer is.

All that having been said, you've hinted at seeing various strategies for DS. What materials have you been using to try to learn this subject?

@ Rich- I am not very sure what material to commence with. I would love to enhance my basics in DS. Please suggest some. I got bogged with some theory like two equations two variable etc but dont know their applications as when and how to use them.

Hi varun,

Are you working with GMAT books, a Course, or some other source for questions? I ask because most GMAT books, Courses, etc. will provide some explanation or lessons on how to handle DS questions. I'd like to know what material you've been using so far. If you haven't invested in a GMAT Course, then you might consider the various options out there. Consistent, professional advice can help you to beat the various DS questions you'll face and everything else that appears on the GMAT.

Thanks for the reply. I studied Manhattan sporadically but din't find anything specific about DS. Please recommend me solely some good material for DS.

Hi Varun,

Most GMAT Companies offer some type of free resources or sample practice materials; I'd suggest that you research the various options then pick the one that helps the most, and matches your personality and budget.

Hi Varun,

I was in a similar situation as you are in.

Initially, I made myself aware with the following steps:

Step1: Is it a Value Question (or) Yes/No question?
Step2: What is the best possible rephrase for a given DS question?
step3: How do I quickly move from option A to option B without statement carry over?
step4: Which options can I clearly get rid off?

Hope these steps will help you as staring points!
