Distance PS

by vishubn » Tue Dec 23, 2008 7:47 pm
Tom and Linda stand at point A. Linda begins to walk in a straight line away from Tom at a constant rate of 2 miles per hour. One hour later, Tom begins to jog in a straight line in the exact opposite direction at a constant rate of 6 miles per hour. If both Tom and Linda travel indefinitely, what is the positive difference, in minutes, between the amount of time it takes Tom to cover the exact distance that Linda has covered and the amount of time it takes Tom to cover twice the distance that Linda has covered?
a-60
b-72
c-84
d-90
e-120

Vishu,
I m not sure why you would use plug in values since the answer choices are not in terms of variables. Help me understand.

I am getting 90 minutes

6(t-1) = 2t

6(t-1) = 4t

I am not too sure how I can help you plugin, I think its difficult for me

I am getting 108 as the answer.

Distance = speed * time

linda's distance = tom's distance

linda has already covered 2 miles in first hour

2+ 2t = 6t

t = 1/2 hrs = 60/2 = 30 minutes---------------I

Linda's distance * 2 = tom's distance

(2 + 2t)*2 = 6t

4 + 4t = 6t

4/2 = t

t = 2 hrs = 120 minutes-----------II

positive difference of I-II = 30 - 120 = 90
