trucks

by acorra » Sat Oct 25, 2008 7:31 am
One week a certain truck rental lot had a total of 20 trucks, all of which on the lot Monday morning. If 50 percent of the trucks that were rented out during the week were returned to the lot on or before Saturday morning of that week, and if there were at least 12 trucks on the lot that Saturday morning, what is the greatest number of the different trucks that could have been rented out during the week?

A) 18

B) 16

C) 12

D) 8

E) 4

Pls also let me know the level of difficulty in your opinion (700+, 650+, 600+)

cheers
Andrew

I would consider this a medium difficulty question.

Let X = Number of truck rentals

20 - X = Number of Trucks remaining on the lot

Since 20 - X is the number remaining on the lot and 50 percent of the trucks that were rented were returned, we can set up the following equation.

(20-X) + .5X = 12

20 - .5X = 12

-.5X = -8

X = 16

We are asked to maximize the trucks. I think plugging in numbers works faster in this situation

Pick 18

18/2 = 9 + 2(if 18 are rented then 2 would have remained in the lot) =11 not possible since there are 12 trucks left on Sat morning

Pick 16

16/2 = 8 (i.e 50% returned) + 4(if 16 are rented then 4 would have remained in the lot) = 12 - Done

Every other number is smaller.

P.S

If you are asked to mimimize I would pick the smallest number in the choice and work upwards

Good luck!

50 % are back
means 50 still on road

on road are 8
so if 50% is 8
total shall be 16.

[actually is atleast 12 so as 12 will increase 8 will decrease ans our 16 will also decrease so 16 is maximum]

Hope this helps!!

Reagrding difficulty level, yes I think its a tricky Qn.
atleast atmost etc are generally confusing
700+ or may be 670+
