Applying to MBA with CPA

by tvoix » Tue May 25, 2010 9:55 am
Hi Stacy:

I'm looking down the path of getting an MBA right now and would love your thoughts on this background:

(In progress) CPA - 2 years to completion of designation
GPA 3.4
GMAT (In Progress) - Aiming for 700
Undergrad in Science & Business, Honours Dual degree.
Potentially looking at CFA Designation

In terms of applying, how do I make auditing and subpar GPA into something that would appeal to top tier business schools? Would I need to supplement my work experience (finish CPA firm and into another position for 2-3 years prior to applying?)

Thanks!

Dear tvoix,

First, your GPA is not subpar, but right around or slightly above average for most MBA programs. I don't think it will be a concern, especially in light of the fact you have an honors dual degree. Additionally, if you do well on the GMAT (say 680+), then it will further cement your high academic numbers in the evaluation process. With regard to work experience, you have to decide when you are ready to go to business school--when does it make sense for the career path you want to be on? If that means working in another position first, then do that. If you think you need to go to business school to transition to the path you really want to be on after you complete your CPA designation, then apply in the next 12-24 months. Think in terms of the big picture and what makes the most sense for your long-term goals. As for making audit appealing, it is not so much about what you do as the quality of the experience you gain. Use the next 1-2 years to seek out those opportunities to broaden/deepen your skill set, gain leadership experience, and build your resume. Audit is a great place to start your career--find a way to make your audit experience a bit different from everyone else's.

Good luck,
Lisa
