Okay : OA is D. Why.

Split 1: As Vs Like
Split 2: Redundancy : "amounted to a sum of" VS ""amounted to"

A: amounted to a sum of: out for redundency
B: , as many companies with unfinished products, : We need verb in this expression because we use As to compare Clause. Out
c. , like many companies with unfinished products do, : Do is wrong when we use like. Like use to compare nouns.
E: as many companies with unfinished products, : Similar as B.

That leaves D. Which is correctly written though not most favorable at first glance.
Regards
Abhishek

Superb analysis Atul and great question Abhishek , basically i did eliminate D for as ... do which is the reason for it to be correct answer . SC is scary and such questions under time constraint are gonna make one fret .

good one Abhishek, questions such as these not only eat up your time but worse is if you get them wrong too.
Really enjoyed working thru this.

@ AIM and Target

please confirm that i'm correct or not regarding Op E..m asking this question again in order to assure myself that the concept i applied is correct...

Don't u think Op E has an error (apart from indicated in OE)..

COMMA + FANBOYS we use only when we connect 2 IC..but in Op E look the structure below

A small but promising internet initiative ceased its operations because it failed to obtain the investments necessary to complete its research and development, as many companies with unfinished products, and reported expenses that amounted to $890,000 a year.

In green color we have an IC and then COMMA AND followed by NON-IC clause....isn't this an error??? OR COMMA AND PLUS VERB is legal???

If the sentence would have been the below then it is correct :-

A small but promising internet initiative ceased its operations because it failed to obtain the investments necessary to complete its research and development, as many companies with unfinished products, and reported expenses that amounted to $890,000 a year.

The inbetween NON-IC clause is not allowed .Commas can be used to separate ICs as well .As per my understanding .

IMO the Q states 2 reasons for the failure of the start up company
if we look at E,
A small but promising internet initiative ceased its operations because it failed to obtain the investments necessary to complete its research and development
A small but promising internet initiative ceased its operations because it reported expenses that amounted to X.

so as AIM pointed out, phrase as many companies with unfinished products is out of place (it needs a verb as option d correctly has)

Well the point is i heard this thing in many online videos..even in some video from KNEWTON.COM that COMMA PLUS FANBOYS should be only used to connect IC's and here in OP E this doesn't happen.

I think thats why, in case of parallelism where we test verb verb parallelism we use ONLY AND
NOT COMMA.

Why i raised this point is because i find this rule working and helpful in many questions..specially long ones..Thanks
