Your profile, with a solid GMAT score will certainly be strong enough to apply to the schools on your list. That does not guarantee acceptance. The schools you are targeting turn down four or five qualified applicants for every one they accept. Admissions committees are looking to build classes - ones with diversity of experience, goals and perspectives. To stand out you will need to show how your ability to contribute will be different from that of all the thousands of Asian applicants with technical backgrounds.

Much will depend on the quality of your work experience and your ability to demonstrate leadership and managerial potential. You've made a great start by planning ahead. You have time to build professional relationships that will provide strong recommendations. You have time to master the GMAT before taking the test, and you have time to put together strong applications.

I caution all applicants that the top schools are extremely competitive and that technically-trained applicants in particular face long odds. If you are determined to go to business school, you should consider adding a safety school or two to your list.

Good luck,
Tani Wolff
