Acoma and Hopi

by metallicafan » Mon Mar 12, 2012 1:15 pm
The Acoma and Hopi are probably the two oldest surviving Pueblo communities, both dating back at least a thousand years.
A. both dating
B. both of which have dated
C. and each has dated
D. and each one dating
E. each one of which date

My doubts:
1) I know that C and D are wrong in part because we need a modiphiyng phrase and not a parallel clause. However, how can be sure that an idea must be subordinated or kept independent from the main clause? For instance, if choice C were "and each is dating", would it be incorrect?
2) I read in other post that B is wrong not only because is wordy but because the tense is wrong. Because the action has concluded in the present and it is not going on. Is it right?, could someone provide a detailed explanation about it?
Thank you!

Acoma and Hopi are two oldest surviving Pueblo communities - they still exist

B - have dated - wrong tense - intends to mean as if they are no more.
C - same as above - dated is wrong tense
C/D - uses 'and' - no separate clause after 'and' so its inappropriate.
E - each one of X - this is singular and 'date' does not agree in number.

IMO A.

The Acoma and Hopi are probably the two oldest surviving Pueblo communities, both dating back at least a thousand years.
A. both dating
B. both of which have dated
C. and each has dated
D. and each one dating
E. each one of which date

Even I would go for the option A.

First and foremost all the verb tenses using has and have need to be eliminated as 'both forms of the communities date back atleast a thousand years' is a fact set.

A fact set is always represented using a simple present tense. Has and have indicate that they are so far facts but you never know with the future.

So options B and C gets cancelled out then and there...

Option D gets cancelled for using the wrong 'and' as modifier. 'and' is mostly used as a connector or a coordinator.

'Each one of which' is a wrong option as whom should replace which to have the correct usage.
Also 'each one of which' is wordy. If each is to be used as a modifier at all, then you could use
'Each dating'. Hence the given option E is redundant. Meaning the same but awkard and lengthy.

Option A is the perfect option to rely on. Using a modifying phrase as well as use of 'both dating' is idiomatic as well

Hope this really helps...
