Carton problem

A certain carton holds fewer than 50 books. What is the number of books in the carton?
(1) The books in the carton can be divided into 3 stacks of X books each, with 2 books left over.
(2) The books in the carton can be divided into Y stacks of 7 books each, with 2 books left over.

let n be the number of books in the carton.

stat1 - n can be 5,8,11,14,17,20,23,..................44 or 47.not sufficient.

stat2 - n can be 9,16,23,30,37 or 44. not sufficient.

stat1&2 - n can be 23 or 44.not sufficient.

hence IMO E.

my take on this..

fact A gives us one max value and numerous minimum values (insufficient) : Discard AD
fact B gives us one max value and nummerous minimum values (insufficient): Discard B
both facts put together can give us different maximum and minimum values less than 50 e.g. 23 and 44. : Discard C
We're left with E as the only choice.
