Ques. Quasars, at billions of light- years from earth the more distant observable objects in the universe, belived to be the cores of galaxies in an early stage of development.


(A) believed to be
(B) are believed to be
(c) some believe them to be
(D) some believe they are
(E) it is believed that they are

can anyone please explain the answer

I will go with "B".

The sentence is missing a verb. Need an "are" (plural, for plural quasarS) in there.

Look at it this way:
Quasars, ...., believed to be <something>.

It is incomplete. The part separated by commas is non-essential...it helps to just drop it to see the picture clearly.

This looks better: Quasars, ..., are believed to be <something>.

first sentence which explains in detail. In the second sentence, therfore, it should use "are".

This is just my strategy everytime I face some words I don't know of.
