Tense question

by khurram » Mon Feb 18, 2008 12:08 pm
People have discovered the principles of solar energy whenever fuel becomes scarce and expensive but will forget them every time a new source of cheap energy is developed.

A have discovered the principles of solar energy whenever fuel becomes scarce and expensive but will forget
B have discovered the principles of solar energy whenever fuel has become scarce and expensive but they forget
C discovered the principles of solar energy every time fuel becomes scarce and expensive, forgetting
D discover the principles of solar energy every time fuel became scarce and expensive, but they forget
E discover the principles of solar energy whenever fuel becomes scarce and expensive but forget

Ans is E

ABC is incorrect because of tense (past and present, not cosistent)
Why is D wrong -use of they at end, ambigious at the end.

Thanks
khurram

People discover X every time Y became...

Corrections are welcome

My 2 Cents....

Discovery can happen only once not multiple times.

Correct me, If I am Wrong.

you have a point: the sentence would make more sense if it were to be rewritten with 'rediscover' in place of 'discover'. however, sentence correction is generally unconcerned with picking optimal words; the only time diction really matters is when answer choices contain wordings that are absurd or nonsensical (which is not the case here).

I agree,

but even rediscovering the principles everytime ...
not makes sense to me.
redisovery of the fuel makes sense but not principles.

In option E, don't we need a COMMA before 'but' ?

D is wrong because the "they" is an ambiguous pronoun. there are two plural nouns in the sentence - people and principles. Also the sentence is in hte present tense so you need becomes, not became. you do not need a comma before the but.
