Canadian Applicants - GPA differential

by ja42785 » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:55 pm
Does anyone have any experience with applications from Canadian undergrads? The grading system is percentage based, and curved significantly lower relative to US counterparts. I was fortunate enough to graduate in the top 10% of my graduating class at the University of British Columbia, and achieved an "A-" to "A" average. An average like this would equate to a GPA of ~3.8 at a US University. While both my letter grades and my percentage based grades are shown on my transcript, based on the Canadian academic system, my average was 84%. In Canada, an A is 85%. I believe our valedictorian had an average of 88 - 89% (which is a high A). Does anyone have any idea how MBA admissions equates the two systems? Do they follow the Canadian letter grades? Or do they go with the percentages as per the US system? This would hurt my applications as I believe an 84% in the US is like a 3.0 gpa. Any insights would be very much appreciated because a drop like that seems a bit harsh.

Hello ja42785,

I am in the same situation as you. I graduated with a 3.76 from a Canadian university, which meant I graduated with distinction. My average was about an A-. We were on a 4.3 scale. I haven't applied to b-school yet but I am wondering the exact same things you are. Hopefully we will get a reply.

I have looked many times on trying to convert to the US system, but there are just wayyyy too many sites contradicting each other. Would be great to hear from a Canadian applicant who was admitted.

Well a good thing to do (and this applies to folks from EVERYWHERE outside the US is to not just stick with your grades, but use whatever tools you have to impress). For example if getting a 6/10 puts you in the top 5% (as it can in India) you need to let them KNOW that. Or having a 16/20 in France makes you the "Top student out of 800 in department" you need to write that it, or they won't know! Conversions can be confusing, for Adcoms too, especially if you don't come from a "famous school", so you need to use other methods to let them know just how great you are!
