Q1- I just plugged in values for x and y (both +ve and -ve) and found that the answer differed depending on the sign, "+" or "-" of the values. However, if we take x as +ve and y -ve, the answer to the inequality is "NO" in both the cases, hence sufficient!

was wondering if there is there a shorter way to solve this though?
