what is the deciding factor for choosing will / would .

I will go with D....

Greater than is the correct usage and will is needed....

generally would will be preferre din prediction as in A but the usage of numerous is wrong and hence best choice left is D....

It depends upon the If...Then clause... and here is the general rule..


IF ...(present clause) ....then ...(will + verb)
If ...(simple past) ....then ...(Would/should + verb)
If ...(past perfect) ....then ...(would/should + have + verb)

In this question,

34. A wildlife expert predicts that the reintroduction of the caribou into northern Minnesota would fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more numerous than one wolf for every 39 square miles.
(A) would fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more numerous than - 2 problems .. If present clause ..then would fail ...and more numerous is redundant
(B) would fail provided the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more than ...leaving If...then clause all together
(C) should fail if the timber wolf density in that region was greater than
(D) will fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is greater than
(E) will fail if the timber wolf density in that region were more numerous than - 2 problems .. If clause is a simple past and then clause is "will fail" and more numerous is redundant...

Between C & D ... we need present tense here logically not a simple past tense ... so D is right...

My answer: D

A: density more numerous -- wrong measure for density
B: provided -- incorrect qualifier
C: should fail -- incorrect qualifier
E: timber wolf density -- density modifies timber wolf, not population

I don't think a will/would question should be involved here. I think a key factor is that the A of B structure is superior to B A.
Feel free to correct me.

Nice rules. can you please post the source for the rules?

Why does simple past not make logical sense?

I saw a variant of it...

everything is same except 'could' replaces 'should' .
Should has a different meaning I feel according to OG.
It has a sense of obligation.

Anyway, I saw these rules in MGMAT SC.

According to OG, in B) one has to use " greater" instead of "more".

Why? As far as I know, "more" can be used for countable and uncountable nouns, so both "greater" and "more" should be correct?
