E has tense problem. C wins

I have some problems to figure out, wheter a comparison is correct.

c) Less succesful after she emigrated to NY than she had been in her native Germany
e) She had been less successful after emigrating to NY than in her native Germany

Why is the comparison in c) correct and in e) incorrect? I have some troubles to figure it out. Can somebody give advice on this issue?

thx a lot

If you see option E and follow Ellipsis rule i.e part in green

She had been less successful after emigrating to NY than [she had been]in her native Germany

then you will notice that both the events are using had been, it should be that a simple past should follow past perfect, therefore E is wrong

I hope I am clear..........
