(A) what are called aperiodic tiles, turned out to describe

(B) what is called aperiodic tiles, describes

(C) aperiodic tiles, describing

(D) so-called aperiodic tiles, describe

(E) aperiodic tiles, it turned out to describe

I have a query,
What does turned out to describe modify ? tiles or work ?

Logically it should be work, but isn't it modifying tiles ?

The subject of the given sentence is "WORK" and the verb is "TURNED OUT"

I think I got this one.

turned out to describe is not the modifier.

Only on the geometry of what are called aperiodic tiles is the modifier.

Hence if we remove the modifier from the sentence, it would correctly read..

The work of mathematician Roger Penrose in the early 1970s ...turned out to describe the architecture of .....

Had it been"
turning out to describe ... it would have been a modifier modifying tiles.

But here it is simply a verb phrase.
