6. A fire in an enclosed space burns with the aid of reflected radiation that preheats the fuel, making ignition much easier and flames spreading more quickly.
(A) flames spreading
(B) flame spreads
(C) flames are caused to spread
(D) causing flames to spread
(E) causing spreading of the flames


I found this in 1000 SC and OA is given as : D

However I am not sure about D, since as per my understanding from MGMAT SC guide, Making ignition and Causing Spreading of the flames can be Parallel , Since ignition is Action verb and spreading of flames complex gerund.

Can anyone comment ?

Option E is passive. That is why D is preferred.

It can be parallel. That's not why its wrong, its not the most concise option. It is less direct than just stating causing flames to spread.

I think you're confusing the rule. "making ignition is a simple gerund, and should be parallel with another simple gerund. You can't make a complex gerund parallel to a simple gerund per Manhattan GMAT.

Yes but , To spread can not be parallel to Ignition...

I understand you are looking at this from the point of concision but I am just not sure of my understanding of Complex Gerunds

It's already been mentioned but D is clearly a better option than E because it's more concise.

Causing spreading of the flames vs. causing flames to spread?

"Causing spreading of the flames" is just extremely awkward.
