Need Help From Experts Researching Programs

by Ed2289 » Thu Jun 04, 2015 11:37 am
Hello Everyone,

Just starting to research schools as I just took the GMAT and focused solely on that for the last few months. Some suggestions are greatly appreciated!

GMAT: 710 Q47, V40, IR 8, AWA 6
GPA: 3.06 with a BS in Hotel Administration from a Top-50 university (not Cornell)
Work Experience: 5 years in total
First 2 years in Hotel Operations (Front Desk)
Past 3 years in Accounting at large hotel chain, promoted to Accounting Manager a few months ago
Intended Industry After Getting MBA:
Staying in hotel industry, but in asset management or Hotel Acquisition/Development (commercial real estate development)

I'm currently taking classes at NYU to help lessen the damage my low GPA will have on my application. I'm looking at schools in the US, preferably in a large city. I'm hoping my unique background in hospitality (or at least I'm hoping it's unique!) can help me get into the best school possible.

Any input is much appreciated!

With your background and goals, focus on Cornell, Stern, Yale, UCLA, USC.

I think that you should also consider a few back-up schools - while USC is less competitive than the others, Stern, Yale and Cornell all have a very small class size.
Also, why limit yourself to hospitality post school? you might want to talk about it in the essays, but MBA is here to open doors for you, so you want to get as many options as possible.
Think about it - you already have a good understanding of the hospitality business (and accounting), now you need to gain other skills - whether they are investment related, financial modeling, or general management. For general management consider Kellogg, and while UNC is not in a big city, they have a strong focus on finance (and real estate).

Best,
