Manual calculation

by aces021 » Fri Jul 31, 2015 8:16 am
I'm looking for questions that only require you to manually calculate the answer. No word problems, just straight algebra (roots, squares, quadratics, multiplication, variables, etc). Where can I find those with answers?

So, you're looking for GMAT questions that essentially ask you to evaluate some expression? As in "What is the value of sqrt(16^4)?
There aren't a lot of those questions on the GMAT, and the ones that exist are typically lower-level questions.
That said, there are some. They are often questions involving powers, roots, and fractions.
There also some questions that ask you to solve an equation.
To help you focus on one topic at a time, you can use BTG's tagging feature. For example, here are all of the questions tagged as powers and roots questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... -and-roots
See the left side of that linked page for more tag options.

Cheers,
Brent

Awesome, thank you. I'm focusing on the fundamentals. I figure if you can't solve a straight up fraction problem, then you can't solve a fraction problem that is in a word problem.

Hi aces021,

For free math practice and help, I recommend that you set up an account at Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). The site is completely free and makes the learning a bit more fun and 'game-like' (as opposed to the dry academic approach taken by most books). While the site is vast, you should limit your studies to basic Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. After spending a little time re-building those skills, you can work on more GMAT-related work.

There are a lot of great websites out there to learn basic mathematical concepts (like, as Rich suggested, Khan Academy), HOWEVER none of them address GMAT-specific concepts and strategies (data sufficiency strategies for one). Also, users are often exposed to concepts that are not tested on the GMAT, and this can waste what remaining time you have.
If possible, I suggest sticking with resources that a specifically towards the GMAT.

Our free video course starts with the most basic concepts and works up to 800-level concepts. I'm sure there are other courses that do the same.
