"Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time."
Some argued that important truths begin as an outrageous attacks upon the conventional wisdom. Eventhough that statement is true in some cases, not all discoveries of importanth truths is first dismissed as crazy and not all outrageous claims is a discovery of important truth.
All throughout the history, human kind try their best to understand themselves and the universe around them. We have the tendency to find out about something and when we think we found the answer, we accept that notion and call it truth. As time progress, however, we keep learning something new. This new idea might contradict the previous wisdom, and thus be seen as outrageous. An example of this kind of "outrageous-new-idea" is when Galileo proposes that the earth is a round floating something revolving around the Sun. This contradicts with the accepted notion that earth is flat and is also the center of the universe. The new theory is called heretical since it seemingly contradictory with the Christian belief that human is a special God's beloved. This idea is considered crazy because it challenges what is known about human existence.
The importance of the issue itself, why and how we exists, makes this claim marked as outrageous and the debate is a memorable one. There are discoveries of truths everyday, but when it did not attract the attention of many then no one would even bother to call something outrageous. An example of these is the discoveries of 46 new species of insects in Borneo.
Eventhough, some important discoveries were seen as an outrageous attacks of known wisdom, some important discoveries were not. Most people did not call healing scurvy in sailors by giving them oranges, what later understood as the discovery of the concept of vitamins, outrageous. The truth we learn from it is, nevertheless, important.
Also noteworthy is that not all outrageous claims ended up agreed as an important truth. In human kind search for truth, many different claims are made. Some of these claims would be dismissed as outrageous and later found out to be wrong. An example is the many outrageous diet plans such as the 1920s Water and Vinegar diet. There are a lot of people calling them outrageous at the time, and we know now that it is not a healthy way to loss weight.
In conclussion, some outrageous claims later understood as an important truth. However, that does not apply in all of the cases. Some discoveries of important truths were not marked as silly, and some outrageous claims will forever be known as crazy.
