Don't sacrifice your life to work and ideals. The most important things in life are human relations."
The issue of choosing between "work and ideals" and human relations is a controversial one. On the one hand work and ideals are important for a person, while on the other hand human relations are also very important. According to me the most important things in life are human relations. Priority has to be given to human relations.
One reason for my beleif is that human beings are social animal. We do not live in isolation. We are surrounded by parents, friends, colleagues, neighbours etc. Relations are the founding block of our society. If we do not have relations and do not give importance to them, then the whole society will collapse. Work and ideals are important but if the relations are not there or if relations are not given due respect then the society will fail. In a failed society we cannot have a successful work life.
Another reason for my beleif is that human relations last forever. Things which last forever must be given top priority. The friend which you made in your school or college remains your friend throughout your life. In good times and in bad times your friends stand by you. On the other hand work keep on changing. In general work life is limited to around 25-30 years. It does not means that one should not give importance to work and ideals, or dont do work properly. If a person has to choose between a work and human relations then it is adviceable to choose human relations as human relations last more longer.
One example that immediately comes to my mind is that of Alexander the Great. Alexander conquered almost the entire world. He loved his mother, but was busy fighting and conquering other nations. While returning to his own country Alexander fall sick. He was shown to the doctor and the doctor told him that there is no chance of his survival. He wanted to meet his mother, but he was far away from his country and there was not much time left. He announced that he would give away his entire empire if someone can make him live till the time he meets his mother. But no one could help him. He before departing to the heavenly abode says that let the world know that even Alexander the Great could not take away even one penny along with him and the person who was most important for him he could not meet her before his death.
This is a lesson one should always keep in mind whenever a person has to choose between work and Human relations. You may not get a chance to say that you love your wife, your parents, your children or your friends. This thought itself makes us humble and make us think that is work everything. Work we are doing for our family , but if we do not have time for our family then that work is of no benefit.
So to conclude I beleive one should do hard work and follow ideals, but when a choice comes between human relations and work its human relations that is more important. Dont sacrifice your life for work and ideals.
