"In making a complex decision, one should trust experience more than instinct."
The issue of basing a decision on experience versus instinct is a complex one. While both the techniques have their own merits, the priority of the situation should be deciding factor to choose either of them. In my view, the benefits of using experience to handle situation outweigh the benefits of using instincts.
One of the prime benefits of basing a decision on experience is reliability. When a decision is based on experince, the decision maker is already aware of the pros and cons of the action. The same does not hold true for the decisions based on instinct, in which case the solution was implemented based on a whimsical idea of the manager. Numerous examples from the real world can be seen where the decisions made from previous learnings are more reliable one such example is the IT bubble burst of 2000. In those days every day thousands of merchants were bringing in their own personal online websites with out even realizing the potential gain from the idea. After the bubble burst, many of these merchants either went bankrupt or incurred heavy losses and realised that traditional way is still the best way to do business.
Additionally, the other benefit of the technique is a higher probability of a more effecient solution. The very process of using an experience to solve a issue can lay the ground work for an effecient solution. The solution in this is a multistep process, that starts from defining the problem, identifing the root cause and choosing from a pool of applicable resolutions. The manager can relate the pieces of the puzzle, thereby understanding the problem completly before arriving at a conclusion. The same cannot be said about the decisions taken instantly, in which case there aren't a multilevel steps to arrive at a solution.
The parliament of India was attacked by a group of terrorists in December 2001. The instinctive reaction to such an active would have been a military action against the real brains behind the attacks, instead the government of India, though it knew who the real men were behind the attack, chose not to attack its enemies. India had been involved in a war three times and it knows from the first hand experience that war brings more misery than glory. Though criticized early its decision, the government is praised now for making such an important decision.
Finally, as it sums up the decisions based on experience has more benefits. It not only provides an effecient solution, but also provides a opportunity to learn from previous mistakes. The wonderful thing about this technique is that this new decision will inturn become a experience that can be relied upon in future.
