"There is only one definition of success - to be able to spend your life in your own way."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the author, the meaning of success is different for different people. Success always doesn't mean earning lots of money and holding a position of power. It depends on how a person visualizes success. On the other hand, it can also be argued that success is all about being recognized and this recognition comes by earning money and exercising influence. I however, agree to the point made by the author and would like support my claims by highlighting some examples.

The meaning of success has been different for those in the field of business such as Bill Gates and Steve jobs. Success for them has been to increase the profits of their company and outrun every other company in the rat race. They have preferred to hold a position of import and influence so that they can make influential decisions and govern the operations of their company. This is how they have decided to spend their life and is a personal choice.

On the other hand, meaning of success is entirely different for a common man such as a gardener or a carpenter. Though these kinds of jobs might not give huge returns, still there are people who have taken up such professions because they like it. This is what they are interested in and try their best to excel in their field. I am able to recount the case of my friend who wanted to study zoology but was not supported by his family due to the low returns. He however stuck to his desires and is now a successful wildlife conservationist. It can again be argued that this is how some people have chose to spend their lives and are happy with the decision.

The meaning of success is still very different for people who are into social service. More and more young minds are taking up jobs in Non government organisations and working in villages amidst the squalor and deficient facilities in order to give a better life to the people. The people working in these organisations feel successful when they are able to bring smiles to the destitute and help them lead a healthy life. A perfect example would be that of Mother Teresa, who spent almost here entire life in improving the living conditions of the poor and tried to lend selfless service as much she could. Social service doesn't promise a successful career with a fat salary and a position of import, but people still chose that field because this is what some are meant to do and this is what their true calling is.

Thus, I strongly believe that success means being able to spend your life by your own terms and being able to fulfill your dreams though the dreams might differ from person to person.
