ESSAY QUESTION:
The following appeared in The Homebuilder magazine, a local publication with a focus on construction and sale of real-estate properties:
"According to the most recent survey of our readers, nearly 70% of the respondents indicated that they are planning to build or purchase a new home over the next 2 years. These results indicate that the growth in the construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future. Therefore, this industry continues to offer lucrative opportunities for investment."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
I don't agree with the following argument. This argument states that the survey was taken from "The Homebuilder" magazine, which the respondents are people who are interested in building or purchasing a new home. I believe this statement only agree to people who have the luxury to get a new home.
Only magazine subscribers participated in this survey and it doesn't show how many people were part of this survey. 70% of the respondents doesn't guarantee that most people in the U.S. indicated that they are planning to build or purchase a new home over the next 2 years.
People who have the money to build or purchase a new home are considering this option. Most people in the U.S. live at a rental property, which doesn't necessarily indicate that the construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future.
Certain locations of building or purchasing a new home can be a big consideration. There are opportunities to invest at low cost of real estate properties, but these won't necessarily be great investments. Most people have to consider large amount of real estate loans if they want to invest, and most have been struggling with debt problems.
I believe the statement doesn't take great considerations on the rest of the people who can't afford to build or purchase a new home. A few respondents can't change the future of construction industry and offer great opportunities for investment. If there is a opportunity that most people have the chance to invest, then it will most likely to accelerate in the near future.
