Issue Essay

"It is unrealistic to expect individual nations to make, independently, the sacrifices necessary to conserve energy. International leadership and worldwide cooperation are essential if we expect to protect the world's energy resources for future generations."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations or reading.

From the close examination of the above issue, I strongly agree with the fact that international leadership and worldwide cooperation are essential to protect the world's energy resources for future generations. Individual nations can't afford to make the sacrifices necessary to conserve energy upto the required level. This view can be supported with various reasons. The energy can be generated from both natural and artificial resources. Water, wind, solar and biogas are the major sources of renewable energy which can be sustained and used effectively to great extent. Coal and crude oil are natural sources of the most efficient form of energy resources.

First, every nation is rich and poor in different areas. Some region are rich in natural energy resources whereas some are not. Some nations possess the technology of producing and sustaining the renewable energy resurces while others do not. It is only possible with the combined efforts of all the nations that could create and save energy for future generations. This is the era of globalization and the economy of one country depends on the other. The Arab nations are rich in fuel resources but they do not possess a rich natural environment. The United States of America is a major consumer of crude oil. America is a large country and primarily relies on fuel and power. Similarily, Dubai is just an island but a main exporter of fuel. It's living depends highly on its rich partners as Arab nations are economically poor.

Second, to regulate the flow of energy resources and economy all over the world, it is important that an independent body must be there to protect and harness the world's energy resources. The independent body must be an international organization rather than a local body. For example, United Nations is doing an immense job by supporting all the nations and acting as their leader. It is only because of the worldwide cooperation that such a body is working effectively in order to protect the world's energy resources. Nowadays, every nation highly depends on energy and power for growth and development. Most of the countries are facing shortage of fuel and energy. India as a big nation and has the highest population density. If there is no international leadership, such a nation would be prone to scarcity of resources where demand is always much higher than supply. United Nation Organization keeps in mind the interest of all the nations and its people rather than one particular one. If the power is handed to an individual nation, then it might be misused against others. Hence, if we want to control fuel shortages and rising fuel prices, then an international body must be formed that is backed by worldwide cooperation. Only then things would be free from unethical practices and nepotism. We should focus on long term benefits and must preserve energy resources in an environment friendly way.

Also, powerful nations depends highly on nuclear power for its energy resources. Some are building more nuclear power plants than needed. Their intentions are not good and transparent. Such practices are dangerous for other nations as well as for its own in case of natural calamities. Natural disaster like earthquakes can lead to man-made nuclear disaster like the one recently seen in Japan. It leads to loss of life and property on a large scale. Also, nuclear power plants are developed by sacrificing natural resources like forests and hills. Some might argue that nuclear energy is essential for meeting a country's energy requirements. But factors like nature of geographical region, environment destruction and man-made disaster can't be ignored. Hence, there must be an independent body acting worldwide that checks the uncontrolled and unethical practices of energy production and distribution in a particular nation. A safe environment must be the primary concern for every nation which should never be compensated by socially irresponsible practices.

Moreover, renewable and sustainable forms of energy must be used as it is very efficient as well as effective in nature. It also promotes clean environment and generates least amount of pollution. We have highly advanced technology of generating and preserving energy in the most efficient and environment friendly way, then why not use it widely in an ethical manner. If such practice is to be followed worldwide, then an individual nation working independently can not make it possible to conserve energy. Rather, a cooperative and combined effort is needed from every nation in order to bring harmony for future generations. International leadership is essential to protect world's energy resources for future generations.
