The following appeared in a memorandum from the business department of the Apogee Company. "When the Apogee Company had all its operations in one location, it was more profitable than it is today. Therefore, the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location. Such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees." Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc.

The author concludes that Apogee Company should close its field offices and conducts all its operations from a single location. In fact, the author also concludes that such centralization would improve profitability by cutting cost and also help the company to maintain better supervision of all employees. The reasons offered to support the conclusion are that the Apogee Company was more profitable when it had all its operations in one location. The argument is unconvincing because the author oversimplifies the problem and its solution in number of ways.

To begin with, by concluding that centralization would help the Company to improve profitability by cutting costs and to maintain better supervision of all employees, the author ignores the increase in the cost that will be needed to visit field offices by its employee. Travelling will also waste lot of valuable time of the employee. So the author needs to identify the factors to decrease the cost and improve profitability. It is difficult to be convinced by the reason provided by the author that centralization is the only solution that would help to cut the cost.

Secondly, the author should identify other factors because of which profitability of the company decreased. It may be the reason that now customer dislikes the product of Apogee Company or customers have new preference of products. In fact there may be other reasons for decrease in profitability, such as increase in the number of competitor because of which the profit of the Company was reduced . Thus the author should identify all the factors before concluding that decentralization is the reason for decreasing of profit.

The author mentioned that centralization would help company to maintain better supervision of all employees. The author must identify the factors that are impacting the supervision of all employees. It may be the reason that managers are inefficient or there may be some trade union that is not listening to managers. So the author must identify all the factors before concluding about the problem and its possible solution.

In conclusion, this argument is weak because the author oversimplifies both the problem and its possible solutions. To strengthen the argument the author must examine all factors that might account for decrease in profit. Additionally, the author should consider all possible solutions to determine which solution will help the Apogee Company to increase the profitability.
