Please rate my Argument Essay

Please rate my Analysis of an Argument Essay :) My test is next week and I want to see where I stand. Thanks!

Last summer saw a 500% increase in tourism at the seaside resort, and the national economic situation is even more favorable this year. This summer ' s tourist boom will surely generate record revenues which will resolve the area ' s economic difficulties.
Explain how logically persuasive you find the argument. In discussing your viewpoint, analyze the argument ' s line of reasoning and its use of evidence. Also explain what, if anything, would make the argument more valid and convincing or help you to better evaluate its conclusion.

The author of the preceding statement states that last summer's 500% increase in tourism coupled with the improving national economic situation, will result in a summer tourist boom that will generate record revenues, therefore resolving the area's economic difficulties. While this statements may very well have some merit, it is based on unsubstantiated premises and unsupported assumptions.

The primary flaw with the preceding arguments is a result of unsubstantiated premises. The author mentions that last summer saw a 500% increase in tourism. However, he fails to the reasons for that, or the absolute figures. There could have been a hurricane three years ago that ceased all tourist activity, therefore last year's tourism numbers would have generated a 500% increase, even if they were generally poor. The author also mentions that the economic situation is more favorable this year. There is no evidence for this and no basis for that statements. The author simply fails to mention the background for this data. Is he using unemployment data, tourism numbers, inflation? We simply don't know and cannot take his statements as valid, without the supporting data. Along with the two premises mentioned above, the author fails to provide support for several assumptions that he makes.

The secondary flaw with the author's argument results from the lack of support for the assumptions used to drive the conclusion. The author assumes that this summer's tourist boom will surely generate record revenues. There is simply no support for this assumption. In fact, we cant even assume that there will be a tourist boom this summer. Perhaps, bad weather conditions could halt all tourist activity. Even if there is a tourist boom that generates record revenues, we cant assume that will resolve the area's economic difficulties. There are too many factors that come into play when determining economic conditions, and there may be greater factors that overshadow tourism. Based on the lack of support for the assumptions above, we cannot accept them without proper evidence.

The author can improve his argument by adding several key points of data. The author needs to provide background for the 500% increase in tourism, including the absolute numbers and causes for it. The author also needs to provide evidence that the national economic situation is more favorable this year. After that, he must provide support that this summer's tourist boom will generate record revenues and that this will resolve the area's economic difficulties. After the items mentioned above are supported, the author will greatly improve the validity of his statement.

In sum, the author's conclusion that this summer's tourist boom will generate record revenues and resolve the area's economic difficulties cannot be accepted without proper support and evidence for the premises and assumptions used. However, by justifying assumptions and providing more details and supported data, the author's argument may very well have merit.
