"In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In
other countries, there is little or no censorship."
In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs?
Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.
Television and Radio programs are two of the more popular mass media that reach out to the public. Some countries carefully censor offensive language and behavior that is portrayed in the programs, while others prefer not to. I am going to present my points of view as to why there should be censorship in programs and what should be addressed.
The two popular mass media while airing programs to entertain should also realize the role they play in education and public awareness. Given the influence this medium has on the public, it is the responsibility of the producers of the programs and the airing channels to ensure they do not offend the public with their language and behavior. The target audiences contain children and young adults who are easily influenced by the programs.
Firstly, there is a need to check what programs need censorship. For instance, any program that is aired for adults and follow timings suitable for adults can be given some concession in terms of censorship. Programs that are telecast at primetime and major events should be closely observed for censorship. These are programs that reach a wide audience from all walks of life and various age groups. For instance the behavior of artist Marshall Mathers in one of the video awards function should be subject to censorship. This act, which the artist accepted later was put up increase the TRP ratings, is not appropriate or required.
Secondly, subjects that are sensitive to a certain sect of people, certain religions or behavior that can initiate violence requires closer review for censorship. Different countries have their culture and customs that its citizens follow. Programs and the group working on censorship should work together to deliver what is best for the specific target audience.
To conclude, I believe censorship is required for programs that is aired in Television and Radio. I also believe that this has to be handled by a group that can work effectively with the channels/producers of the programs and a group that understands the audience where the program is aired.
