Every parent wishes to imbibe in his/her child all the qualities that will help him succeed in every walk of life. Both self discipline and self esteem are important ingredients ,necessary to take one ahead in life. However,i agree with the author in his statement that self discipline holds more importance than self esteem.
Self discipline if taught right from a nubile age to a child goes into making him/her a punctual, regular and sincere human being, qualities essential in today's world to steer ahead. From the smallest of things like being punctual at school to being on time for classes to the many more serious appointments one has to attend much later in life, self discipline is the building block.
Discipline in terms of academics, extra curriculars and as a way of life is very essential for the all round growth of a child. He learns to value each and every activity that he is involved in and also gives his hundred percent to it.
it is said that habits picked up at a young age continue even in adulthood and are with a person all his life. If a person has never been disciplined in his life, he would not know as to how seriously he needs to take life. it is true that for a child too much seriousness cannot mean a good thing as its his age to also enjoy life. but one must remember that it still important.
Self esteem on the other hand is vital but too much self esteem does more harm than good. A little self esteem is necessary for every person to stand by his own decisions and actions but too much of it can make a person egoistic and highly self centered. In a study some years back it was found that psycopaths have the highest self esteem and hence they feel for no one except themselves. Too much self esteem from a tender age makes a child prone to getting converted into a bully and in turn makes him behave disrespectfully with his peers.
Those victimized by such a person in turn suffer from low self -esteem. It therefore forms part of a vicious circle.
In sum,i would like to add that self discipline ,along with being beneficial to the person possessing it never harms others around a person. However, self esteem if not in the right amount can do more harm than good.Hence it is more important to do be self disciplined than be self esteemed.
