Courtesy is rapidly disappearing from everyday interactions and as a result, we are all the poorer for it.
The speaker here states that courtesy is disappearing from everyday communication and we are becoming poorer in that aspect. Each day we face bad incidences which makes us believe that integrity and goodness is vanishing. Nevertheless, I believe that courtesy has an existence in the society.
Courtesy is subjective to someone's maturity level. I believe most of the young brigade is considerate enough to respect the values and upbringing. For instance, smokers asking whether anyone minds if they light up, people letting others with fewer items ahead in grocery-store lines, passengers offering seat to senior citizens or even when a person helps a blind to cross road. Earlier while visiting our neighbor's or relative's house, we righteously knock their doorbell on the spot. However, today, we call up, check on their availability, and then plan a meeting. I agree that courtesy is interchanged with formality. People are busy with their demanding jobs and fast changing lives and thus there is a formal shade to everything right from invitation to reunions or meeting, which sometimes loses human touch. But, there is courtesy of considering the people around us. For example, Raffles High School, one of the best high schools in Singapore, recently launched 'Be Considerate' campaign that requires student to do courteous action in society everyday for a month. The school also asked the student to keep a record of all the activities they had done. After a month, most students reported that the school's program helped students to make courtesy as their habit. Hence, it is noticeable that education contributes and influences human behavior. I agree that there are occasions when people abuse and use foul words or behave in an indecent way, which violates civility. But, government rules and regulations can control them.
In conclusion, I feel that courteous incidences prevail more than rude behaviors, as being considerate is an easy task, which can solve lot of chaos in lives. I think younger generation has an eye to observe the world and judge people in a better manner. It is a human tendency that negative experiences leave stronger impressions and tend to be more newsworthy, but we need to out bad things behind and start afresh each time.
