ESSAY QUESTION:
“Monetary compensation is the most powerful stimulus for improving employee productivity.”
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your viewpoint using reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
MY RESPONSE:
I disagree with the statement citing monetary compensation as the most powerful stimulus for improving employee productivity. Monetary compensation is one of the stimulus for improving employee productivity but it is not the most powerful one. There are other factors which play a pivotal role in improving employee productivity.
The most important stimulus, I believe, is the level of job satisfaction the employee derives from his or her job. If an employee is not satisfied with his/her job role or other aspects, he/she will not put in their best efforts into the job at hand. For my personal experience I have seen that productivity of the employees improves if they have better job satisfaction in a job than in another. For instance, in the IT division of my company a set of people stuck in job roles which they loathed, did not do full justice to their work. However, the same set of people when transferred to job roles which they were more happy to do, showed significant improvement in their productivity levels.
Another important stimulus relating to employee productivity is the work culture and the conditions at the workplace. Employees sitting and working in a mundane office cannot be expected to show productivity levels similar to those employees who work in a more cheerful environment. The conditions at the workplace and the work culture followed there plays an important role in the outlook of the employees towards their work and their competitiveness at the job. Thus, ensuring a positive, energetic work conditions will definitely improve the employee productivity more than monetary compensation would.
The responsibilities given to the employee also play a major role in shaping employee productivity. An employee who is given important responsibilities to shoulder will feel motivated to give in his/her best efforts, in order to bolster the trust that the employer has shown in his/her capabilities. If, an employee is not given enough responsibilities, he/she will not feel that they are really important in the scheme of things at the workplace. Thus, employers should divide responsibilities as appropriate in order to improve employee productivity.
However much important the above mentioned factors maybe, the existence of monetary compensation as a stimulus for improving employee productivity cannot be ruled out, though it is not one of the most powerful stimulus for the issue of employee productivity.
Thanks.
